The “Fruits” collection brings together traditional Azerbaijani carpet weaving and a contemporary artistic approach, building on the original concept by artist Samira Allahverdiyeva. Inspired by her childhood memories, her grandmother’s craft as a carpet weaver, and the tradition of drying fruit on antique carpets in different regions of Azerbaijan, this concept forms the artistic foundation of the collection. In Samira Allahverdiyeva’s works, pomegranate and persimmon motifs take centre stage, expressing memory, national traditions, and the notions of abundance and prosperity deeply rooted in Azerbaijani culture. Inspired by the original concept, young artist Sema Mammadli has further developed the collection through her own distinctive artistic style, introducing a new visual direction. Her compositions feature pomegranate, apple, and lemon motifs, presented through a contemporary colour palette, a more vibrant approach, and dynamic design solutions. Thus, the collection brings together the distinct perspectives of two artists, creating a creative dialogue between tradition and modernity.
Handwoven from wool and silk, the carpets are crafted using 3D weaving technology, which gives the fruit motifs volume and a relief effect. The carpets based on the works of both artists are handwoven by Azerkhalcha’s women weavers from rural communities across Azerbaijan. This approach not only connects contemporary art with traditional carpet weaving but also contributes to preserving national heritage and sustaining the craftsmanship of women weavers.
Only a selection of works from the “Fruits” collection is presented in the exhibition.
